The trailer for the upcoming Julie & Julia movie is out! Meryl Streep plays the venerable Julia Child and Amy Adams, the blogger Julie Powell who chronicled cooking through Julia’s Mastering The Art of French Cooking through her Julie/Julia Project blog. The film is based on Julie Powell’s book of the same name, as well as Julia Child’s My Life in France.
I don’t know about you, but this is one movie I really want to see this summer. Debuts August 7. I loved watching Julia Child on PBS as a kid, and for much of my childhood thought that The French Chef really was French, and that French people just spoke English but with a high-pitched Pasadena accent. Had no idea what she was actually doing, but loved watching her cut up chickens, much as I imagine kids like watching the Food Network these days.
Can you imagine a better person to play beloved Julia than Meryl Streep? Apparently director Nora Ephron bumped into Meryl Streep in New York, told Meryl she was working on a script about Julia Child, which inspired Meryl launched into a perfect Julia imitation. (Full story on USA Today.)
Amy Adams plays a decidedly more G-rated version of Julie Powell than the blogger/author is known to be. Which is probably a good thing considering I imagine the producers want to reach a wide audience. Julie Powell’s writing and stories might be hilarious, but they can be a little disconcerting if you aren’t prepared for all the f-bombs she launches so freely in her work.
Bravo for Nora Ephron for taking this on. Can’t wait to enjoy Meryl declaring “Bon Appetit!” on the big screen!
