Kid-Friendly Wraps

Kid friendly wraps recipes including peanut butter and jelly wraps and cream cheese, sliced ham, and shredded carrots wraps. Roll-ups made with flour tortillas and various fillings.

Peanut Butter and Jelly Wrap

1 Layout out one flour tortilla. Spread a layer of peanut butter over the center of the tortilla, leaving an inch clear around the edges. Spread a thin layer of jam or jelly over the peanut butter.

2 Fold the left and right edges of the tortilla over about an inch, towards the center of the tortilla, then starting with the edge of the tortilla closest to you, roll up the tortilla. Cut the wrap in half with a sharp knife, in the center.

Cream Cheese, Sliced Ham, Carrot Wrap

1 Spread a thin layer of cream cheese over the center of a flour tortilla, leaving an inch lear around the edges. Place a couple of pieces of thinly sliced ham over the cream cheese. Sprinkle on grated or thinly sliced carrots.

2 Fold the left and right edges of the tortilla over about an inch, towards the center of the tortilla, then starting with the edge of the tortilla closest to you, roll up the tortilla. Cut the wrap in half with a sharp knife, in the center.

    Well, we aren’t kids, but my husband and I love warming up a tortilla and wrapping it around peanut butter and honey. Or making tuna salad quesadillas. Like you said, we pretty much use them like bread.

    So I went to my friend’s graduation party. And her French cousins brought these peanut butter and jelly wraps. But there was a twist: they put Fruit Roll Ups/Fruit By The Foot in them. I thought it was very odd to have the fruit snacks in them. But I ate at least 10 of them; so delicious!

    I can’t believe no one has recommended the CLASSIC PG&J wrap — add rice krispies cereal!

    They serve this all the time at my university — yes, university — and there’s always a line for them. Delicious!

    Make it like a quesadilla! mash up the banana, and spread peanut butter on one tortilla. Then put the banana in thin layer over the peanut butter. Finish it with another shell on top. Cook on a griddle until light brown, flip over, and do the same to other side. SOOO delicious, especially with some yogurt for dipping!

    I’ve made salami, lettuce, cheese, and thrown a little vinagarette/italian dressing on it for a quick lunch…it’s amazing. Sometimes I throw it in the toaster oven before adding lettuce and then include some onion.

    Oh, growing up I made pb&j wraps all the time, and also pb&honey (or substitute almond butter for the pb).

    One I do nowadays is to cook any sort of meat – chicken, beef, turkey, salmon – and do a sort of burrito.
    – avocado, salsa, lettuce
    or make it more like a sandwich – avocado, lettuce, mayo, mustard, roasted garlic…

    The possibilities are endless! and if you make enough meat for several lunches, you’ve got all the fixins for a fast lunch! YUM.

    My son and I do a veggie wrap based on veggie pizza. Carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, & lettuce is what we usually use, but you could use any vegetable that you like. Cut them up in small pieces. We also add shredded cheddar cheese. If we have it, we will use a little cream cheese, but always use ranch dressing. We roll it up burrito style. My son once commented that it was so good it tastes like “junk food”.
    Another we like I have made for parties and it’s always a big hit. Using assorted flavor wraps, fill with turkey, ham, lettuce, tomato, cheddar cheese slices, cream cheese, ranch, and mayo. Roll up and cut into pinwheel sandwiches.

    For all of you who enjoy the butter and cinnamon add a couple dollups of apple pie filling roll ’em up, brush with butter and sprinkle cinnamon and sugar, then bake for 10 minutes at 325. Eat them alone or top with some ice cream. Yummm! Other pie fillings are just as good to they are even reat to send in lunches. Just let them cool and wrap tightly in saran wrap.

    I make this with cream chesse then ham or turkey next grated cheddar cheese next black and green olives that have been sliced and a little red onion. Then I roll them up and let sit overnight. Then I slice them into pinwheels. Thanks for all the ideas.

    To katie – I would leave out the cucumber, thats probably what is making it soggy. Rather than covering the base of the wrap with cream cheese and turkey and rolling it, try putting the filling thickly down a line in the middle (cream cheese on the bottom, turkey on the top and veg in the middle), then fold the wrap round it so you mainly get wrap in contact with wrap, which will keep it drier. Another tip (which sounds a bit odd) is to use slightly stale wraps.

    My favorite wrap recipe, spread a wrap with mayo, add half a mashed avocado, sprinkle with pine nuts, rocket and shaved parmesan. Amazing!

    For low cal/low fat pinwheels of high protein deliciousness, try this: Fill a wheat or Flour tortilla with turkey, spring mix type salad greens, thinly sliced LIGHT muenster cheese and LIGHT french Onion dip (hey, it’s only like 40 calories for 2 tablespoons and you only need one!)

    They are so good, I am addicted

    (my mom mixes some of the dip with light cream cheese and omits the muenster and it is *almost* as good)

    Question for all you “Wrappers”:

    I’ve made tortilla wraps (turkey, cream cheese, cucumber, lettuce) for hubby and I for lunch, and I find they get soggy if I make them in the am, ahead of time. Do you have any suggestions? I found them totally unpalatable.

    Another tortilla/wrap fave of my kids: Fruit Burritos

    4 6-inch tortillas
    4 tbs peanut butter
    1 banana, sliced
    4 strawberries, sliced
    1 peach, peeled & sliced (remove pit)
    1/4 cup blueberries
    4 tbs vanilla yogurt

    Spread about 1 tbs peanut butter over each tortilla.
    Place fruit slices down center of each burrito.
    Drizzle 1 tbs vanilla yogurt over fruit.
    Roll up tortilla, burrito-style (fold up one side, tuck under fruit, fold up bottom, then roll other side over).

    Vegan “Thanksgiving Wrap”:

    Whole wheat tortilla
    Soy cream cheese
    Couple o’ Cranberry & Stuffing Tofurky Deli Slices
    Handful of dried sweetened cranberries
    Hanful of baby spinach

    Roll up and eat!

    All these great ideas now have me hungry! I’ll add peanut butter and sliced apples for a great lunch. I often have cream cheese and jam, toasted on a quesadilla, for dessert. Breakfast – cream cheese with cinnamon & a little sugar, or just use flavored cream cheese.

    Another version of the PBJ wrap is to wrap it around a whole banana…it’s delicious!

    As an after-school snack I would spread cream cheese on a tortilla and sprinkle with chopped jalapeno peppers. Add some shredded cheese or any other chopped veggies that are on hand (red peppers are nice). I would roll it up and then toast it in the toaster oven to make it crispy, and sometimes I would dip it in sour cream or salsa. Often I would slice it into about 2 inch long sections to share with my sister.

    I like to put garden vegetable cream cheese, then layer with leaf lettuce and cold cuts and cheese, and maybe tomatoes or roasted peppers and roll up. The cream cheese helps hold the edges together. Yum!

    For my kids, we do a great number of these:
    eggarito – eggs and cheese
    chickarito – leftover chicken and cheese
    cheesarito – cheese (and I add salsa and jalepenos)
    [anything]arito – whatever is left over with cheese

    And the kids beg for brown sugar burritos – butter and brown sugar heated in the micro until the sugar and butter melt together, and then rolled up. Mmmmm!!!

    We discovered wraps somewhat by accident when our children were young. I was looking for things that they could make for themselves for breakfast. At four years old, my son could pour his own cereal and milk but he could not spread anything on bread without it tearing. I thought that perhaps the tortillas in the cupboard would work and, sure enough, they did! My two sons love them with PB&J, peanut butter and honey, and nutella. They do work very well in lunchboxes as they don’t get squashed and they don’t get soggy like bread does.

    Another version of a wrap that is a hit with my boys uses ham instead of a tortilla. Simply spread a thin layer of mustard on the ham. Cut a couple of slices, long thin strips, of sweet red pepper and cheddar cheese. Lay them on the ham along with a long thin slice of dill pickle. Roll and eat! It sounds a bit odd but it tastes great.

    My 3 year old daughter loves anything on a tortilla! Our favourite is tinned salmon or tuna mixed with mayonnaise, finely diced celery, finely sliced spring onions and a bit of S&P. For kids parties, slice them into rounds like pinwheels and have different fillings… they look fun but are a healthier option!

    For a snack, we love making cinnamon tortillas. We take a flour tortilla and spread margarine very lightly over it. We then microwave it for 10 seconds, sprinkle with a cinnamon/sugar mixture and roll it up. Yum!!

    My mom liked to make me either a peanut butter and honey wrap or cream cheese and ham wrap for lunch when I was a kid.

    My newest yummy “adult” creation is ham with melted pepperjack cheese, fresh spinach and salsa wrapped up in a tortilla.

    All this talk is making me hungry.

    Organic peanut butter with lots of grated carrots on a wheat tortilla. Sounds strange, but try it. It is really quite delicious! It was my 5-year-old’s favorite.

    The local health food store makes some great wraps. Turkey with avocado is great. My favorite is hummus, tabouli, red onions and sprouts. So good and so filling. In Thailand, my family uses a bit of a thicker wrap than your normal tortilla (but tortillas are just fine) for a dessert by simply spreading sweetened condensed milk on and rolling them up. Super sweet but super yummy.

    My favorite tortilla trick is mini-cinnamon rolls. Take a large flour tortilla, spread with butter, brown sugar & cinnamon. Heat in the microwave briefly – tightly Roll up and slice like a cinnamon roll. Great when you’re craving a cinnamon roll, but don’t want the 1,000 calories that come with it! I’ve also done a whole 8×8 baking pan of these & drizzled with cream cheese icing for a crowd. They got gobbled up!

    My seven year old son likes turkey, shredded cheddar cheese and fresh spinach in his wrap. (Actually, he could probably care less about the spinach, but I add it for added vitamins and fiber). I use whole wheat wraps and add a touch of mayo to hold it together. He literally eats it up. I will have to try the PB&J. I am sure he will love that.

    Where have y’all been? That Peanut Butter/Jelly tortilla has been a part of the snack and school lunches in our family since I was a child. I’m 59. I was raised in South Texas and everyone knew about the versatility of tortillas way before they became the “darlings of the North”. In fact, Corn tortillas are really good heated in the microwave with a hot dog,of your choice inside. A quick non- greasy corn dog.

    You actually can make tortillas too. Its not terribly difficult, however it is a bit more time consuming than paying .79c for 10 at Aldi’s. In a pinch if you run out all you need is flour, baking powder, lard/crisco and salt and a heavy bottom frying pan.

    I put in my ground turkey with chili seasonings, cilantro, refried beans and cheese and rice if I have it. And homemade salsa (tomatoes, garlic, salt and lime juice).

    After a hiking trip where we planned the food badly and ended up eating peanut butter and jelly on tortillas for every meal for three days, I don’t think I could ever look at one of those again. The second one looks great though!

    My eight year old’s current favorite wrap is this: cream cheese spread on the tortilla, then thinly sliced cucumber, radish, and cheddar cheese with shredded lettuce and some salt and pepper before rolling. Nice amount of crunch and flavor. He also likes an egg salad and lettuce wrap as well.

    Chocolate chips and peanut butter
    Honey and peanut butter

    I fried up two eggs with some onion, mushrooms, potato, and bell pepper, tossed it in a tortilla with some ketchup. The possibilities are endless. It doesn’t have to be Mexican to use a tortilla.

    My 2.5 year old loves hummus, fresh baby spinach leaves, and cheddar or colby cheese on his whole wheat wraps. For myself, I make the same as his, but with dill havarti and tomatoes. I also like cream cheese, turkey, baby spinach leaves and tomatoes. My hubby likes his with refried beans, a bit of salsa and shredded cheddar cheese warmed in the toaster oven until just warm.

    I used to make this dessert as a kid: Nutella and bananas wrapped in a tortilla. Great sweet treat, and very well contained. I was such a messy kid when eating (okay, I still manage to stain my clothes when eating spaghetti), my mom loved it for me!

    Our variation is called Whatevers. Use whatever food you’ve got laying around for yours: cheese, lunchmeat, pepperoni, spaghetti sauce, etc. Lay out a tortilla, add your filling, then another tortilla. Toast it up in a frying pan. And while it becomes less “whatever” and more planned, Scouts love them on campouts.

    This is too funny, as on the drive home this morning my husband and I were contemplating what to make our 2.5 year old son for “brunch” and the consensus was a wrap with cream cheese and salami or ham.

    Wraps are awesome. You can do so many things with them. Portable too.

    My husband runs ultra distances, and one of his favorite solid foods on a long run or during a long race are wraps. He’ll make the salami and cream cheese or roast beef and cream cheese. He can put them in his pack, load water bottles and other stuff on them and they don’t get squished and yucky like a sandwich.

    Come to think of it, that’s a good trait for a kid’s backpack too.

    • I love using crunchy peanut butter for texture!
    • I also like Nutella and chocolate chips with cinnamon.
    • Growing up, we also used a slice of bread flattened with a rolling pin to make PB & J “wraps”…rolled them up the same way.
    • Of course, it’s a little over the top, but tremendously yummy to deep fry any of the wrap creations. Just fold over the egdes, secure with a toothpick and drop into hot oil.

    If you put the cream cheese, then the carrots with the ham last then the carrots stick in the cream cheese and are less likely to fall out. Also, I love the salami and cream cheese one mentioned above. I personally make that one with a little relish too.

    A friend who was on South Beach for awhile got me started on peanut butter and apple or banana.

    I also like scrambled eggs with ham/sausage/bacon cheese and salsa. Or just eggs and salsa.

    We love “kid wraps” too :0) Our favorites are peanut butter and honey, ham or turkey with cream cheese and ranch dressing or thinly sliced chicken with salad (the pre-mixed greens in a bag) and ranch. I personally love tuna salad with thin sliced red onion, thin sliced cucumber and plain yogurt.

    I like to spread them with guacamole, cheese and fresh tomato and turkey (sliced thin) – yum!

    My kids love them with black bean dip, cheese and salsa.

    I can’t eat wheat anymore (celiac), but I used to love putting peanut butter on a tortilla, and then plopping a banana on there and rolling it up. Yum!

    Wraps are great because I can make them to each kid’s taste without much hassle. We haven’t thought of PB&J, but we’ll try that soon.

    My son(8) likes his wrap with shredded chicken, pickles, and a bit of mayo. Or chicken and cheese with just a touch of mild salsa.
    My daughter(5) likes chicken and cheese, no salsa, warmed up in the microwave to melt the cheese (they can get chewy, but she likes them).
    My other daughter(10) makes tortilla pizzas in the microwave with pizza sauce, cheese, and whatever else we might have on hand, between 2 tortillas.

    It’s an easy way to let them be creative.

    I knew those kids were smart. I love peanut butter and also eat a lot of whole wheat tortillas, but never thought of combining them and rolling it up.

    Growing up hispanic, I always had my pb&j on tortillas, which wasn’t exactly the cool thing in school, but certainly was tasty.

    I’m partial to hummus, alfalfa sprouts, tomato, and olives in a wrap.

    In the Middle East, a classic wrap: make a paste of za’atar and olive oil. Spread this on one side of a very thin pita. Roll up and heat on a sandwich press.

    This is traditionally given to kids before a test, as it’s supposed to help them concentrate. You can also add cheese or thickened yogurt, but I love the plain- I know what I’m having for lunch today!

    For the kiddies I’ll often add yummy extra things to the PB&J wrap, such as chopped nuts, dried cranberries, sliced banana, or even mini chocolate chips on occasion.

    Here’s one for the grownups that is my absolute favorite!:
    Spread a layer of hummus on the tortilla, then top with some freshly torn basil leaves, a few toasted pine nuts, and a drizzle of asian chili sauce (I prefer Sriricha – not too hot and has lots of chili flavor). The chili sauce can be omitted if you don’t like spicy things, but it really adds a delicious complexity to the wrap. If you’re so inclined you can add some shredded chicken too.

    For another great combo, try dry salami and cream cheese. It’s great for kids, and they absolutely eat it up.

    For the grownups… Add a bit of thinly sliced pepperocini.
    If you’re lucky enough to get them Mazetta’s makes some delicious verieties, available in the canned foods sections (canned in glass jars)

    Wraps can be made into a dessert too! We spread a very, very thin layer of butter then sprinkle cinnamon and sugar on. If you warm it in the microwave for about 5 seconds it makes the rolling easier and melts the butter which melts the sugar. Mmmmm… great for a quick and easy little treat. You could even add raisins!

    Kids love simple quesadillas – cover your tortilla with cheese (mozzarella is good, cheddar or Monterey Jack would work too), some sliced fresh or sundried tomatoes, and fresh basil. Fold it in half, and put it into a hot frying pan or griddle pan which has been just brushed with a little oil. After about 10-20 seconds, when it’s starting to crisp, flip it over and do the other side. The cheese melts, it’s quite pizza-like! You can add loads of other stuff like chilli, meat, etc.
