Use it Up: Heavy Cream

Don’t let that precious heavy cream go to waste! If you find yourself on the verge of throwing it out, don’t! You can use it on both sweet and savory dishes and in everything from soups to pudding.

I don’t normally cook with heavy cream. It’s something I buy for special occasions or a particular recipe, and because I don’t cook with it often, I always, always, always have some leftover.

It seems like every time I open the fridge, it’s staring at me in the face just begging me to use it up. I get so flustered I just shut the door quickly and forget about what I needed in the first place. It’s a vicious cycle! With an eye toward being budget conscious (heavy cream is expensive), I set out to find recipes that can use it up.

When putting together this recipe round up, it was clear to me that heavy cream has so many uses in both sweet and savory dishes, that there’s no reason it should sit unused in the fridge.

Yes you can freeze heavy whipping cream but it will not whip up when it’s thawed…

Once I open a carton of heavy cream, since I don’t use it up quickly, I find it helps to portion it out into one or two small jars, such that they are all almost full to the brim. This eliminates/reduces contact with air which is what spoils most food in the first place. Stored this way, I am able to get weeks out of it.
On an unrelated note, it doesn’t seem like this post went through an editing process. Typos and incorrect spelling in second paragraph.

Great ideas, but I have also frozen heavy cream with no adverse effects.
