If you’ve been reading our One Simply Terrific Thing series for awhile, you may remember that we wrote about Kei & Molly Textiles back in April. This woman-owned business makes our favorite flour sack dish towels – large, absorbent, screen-printed by hand in a variety of lovely designs, and endlessly versatile.
We use them to dry dishes, line a bread basket or cover a bowl of dough, strain stock or yogurt, or bring a bunch of dinner rolls or biscuits to the table. And they wash beautifully too – just throw them in washing machine, wash on cold, then tumble or line dry.
While the towels are excellent, we really love the company.
The founders, Kei Tsuzuki and Molly Luethi, started Kei & Molly Textiles to create good jobs for local refugees and immigrants in their neighborhood, the International District of Albuquerque, New Mexico. Both Molly and Kei identify as immigrants and speak several languages. As they say on their website:
Today, our staff consists of trained artisans, immigrants, and refugees from around the world, working together in craft and production, screen-printing each design by hand to service orders from stores nationwide. Through Kei & Molly Textiles, they find a secure job paying good wages, with support in health and education, and opportunities for leadership and personal development. Working together, regardless of our nationality, religion, or spoken language, we are reminded daily how we are connected in our humanity.
