Sometimes you need to double a recipe or cut it in half, or you may need to convert a measurement on the fly because the measuring cup you need is in the dishwasher.

Whatever the reason, it’s helpful to know equivalents and conversions when you’re in the kitchen. We even have a handy chart you can pin or print out for your fridge!

Ounces by Fluid and Weight are not the Same

In the US, we have both fluid ounces and weigh ounces. They’re not the same.

Fluid ounces are a volume measurement for liquids and should be measured with a liquid measuring cup.

Weight ounces are for—you guessed it!—weight, and should be weighed on a scale.

Quick Cooking Conversions

 How many ounces in a cup? There are 8 fluid ounces in 1 cup.

 How many ounces in a quart? There are 32 ounces in 1 quart.

 How many ounces in a gallon? There are 128 ounces in 1 gallon.

 How many teaspoons in a tablespoon? There are 3 teaspoons in 1 tablespoon.

 How many tablespoons in a cup? There are 16 tablespoons in 1 cup.

 How many cups in a quart? There are 4 cups in 1 quart.

 How many cups in a pint? There are 2 cups in 1 pint.

Converting Ounces to Cups

1 fluid ounce = 2 tablespoons

2 fluid ounces = 1/4 cup

4 fluid ounces = 1/2 cup

6 fluid ounces = 3/4 cup

8 fluid ounces = 1 cup

12 fluid ounces = 1 1/2 cups

16 fluid ounces = 2 cups, or 1 pint

32 fluid ounces = 4 cups, or 2 pints, or 1 quart

128 fluid ounces = 1 gallon

Converting Tablespoons to Cups

2 tablespoons = 1/8 cup 

4 tablespoons = 1/4 cup  

5 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon = 1/3 cup 

8 tablespoons = 1/2 cup 

10 tablespoons + 2 teaspoons = 2/3 cup 

12 tablespoons = 3/4 cup 

16 tablespoons = 1 cup
