I made this soup as a base without the cabbage blitz all together without cabbage and have made as boiled cabbage soup, also with fried cabbage plus with cubed carrot, sweet potato and parsnip, so yummy. The base is so versatile
Made this a few weeks ago exactly as written, and my husband, teens, and I loved it. “Cabbage soup” sounds so bland to me, but I promise that’s not the case at all – this soup is quite wonderful. Even better, it’s one of the easiest recipes around. Will be making it again tonight – truly a keeper!
I’m so glad you liked it HW! It is one of those surprise dishes that tastes so much better than it sounds.
I made this soup last night exactly as written. Fabulous! I’ve already sent the link to three friends. Thank you.
I’m so glad you like it Sue!
This is a delicious soup! I added a few,, very thinly sliced carrots and I used a can of fire roasted diced tomatoes instead of whole tomatoes. It’s a very easy recipe and the results were fabulous! Highly recommend!
This was perfect for a cold night and so easy to make! Loved the taste and the simplicity of it. I used beef stock instead of chicken since that was all I had and it still turned out delicious. Definitely a keeper! Thank you for sharing this :)
Wonderful soup! Perfect spices. My kids and I loved it. Thank you!
Do you think this recipe would be good with lamb? Many of the seasonings are wonderful with lamb, just never used cabbage before with lamb.
Hi jpinnell, I have never had lamb served with cabbage, nor have I seen it in any cookbooks or cooking magazines. So that tells me that it’s probably not the best taste combination. That said, who knows? Maybe there is a way to make lamb and cabbage taste good together that I just haven’t seen yet. If you try it, please let us know what you discover.
Just made this and it turned out super tasty. For the spices I used some ground and some slightly cracked of the whole seeds because I like the crunch. Topped with a tiny bit of sour cream. Very flavorful and warming, will be making again!
I was in the middle of trying to use the cabbage I had in my fridge, and stumbled on this recipe. For the life of me,I couldn’t figure out what spices to use. I used this recipe, and now I will save it as my go to cabbage soup recipe. Did I say it was the perfect spice blend? Delish!
Came out better than expected! Wil be making it again later on today…
I doubled the recipe and added chicken base and garlic. I did not use butter or salt and pepper. I used more than double the Fennel, Coriander and Cumin. It taste Great, Smells Great and I will be making it all winter long.
Fantastic recipe. Cheap, easy, fast, and better than I anticipated. I added some minced garlic in with the onions and dill weed to the seasoning and it hit the spot.
Oh, wow! I was halfway through making southern boiled cabbage when I decided I wanted soup instead. I didn’t use an onion but there was loads of garlic in the dish already. Just the addition of the tomatoes and spices (and a little more of my homemade chicken stock) and this was a perfect soup. Super yummy!
This soup is so nice for a cool winter evening. I think the quality of the broth can make a world of difference! I use my own homemade bone broth and it makes most soup (including this one) delish and healthy!
Didn’t know if i would like this soup but girls at work always talk about cabbage dishes. Well I tried this soup and BINGO ! It’s delicious! Boiled with a smoked hock, and added cannelli beans nothing else as to make it simple enough , fast enough. Can’t wait to make this soup for my next function. Did I say delicious? Straight from a speciality restraunt.
I’m so glad you liked it Rose!
I had a head of cabbage I didn’t know what to do with, so I tried this recipe. It was pretty tasty, but I had to double up on the spices because I could not taste them. I’m not sure this is what I’d call a keeper, but it’s worth trying and I imagine it would not be difficult to tweak it to suit your own tastes.
I made this last night at a glance, so I didn’t get the measurements right. But it was absolutely delish and probably will be a new super easy inexpensive staple food for me being a busy busy student. Thanks!
I love your recipes! I love cabbage and I’ve been making a fabulous cabbage soup for many years that everyone loves, I’m going to try this recipe to see what it’s like; it sounds delish!
NOTE: I always simmer a huge ham hock in my cabbage soup until almost falling apart; remove, shred meat from bones and add to soup. I also add beans–kidney, cannellini, any kind! The flavor from the ham hock is fabulous!
Made this soup today and it was delicious! Used my own homemade stock and that really makes a difference over canned. I used the spices called for and really liked, my husband loved this soup! Will definitely be making again.
Hi Kelly, homemade stock makes a huge difference! I’m so glad you liked the soup!
