I made this for an office potluck in an Air Fryer. Who doesn’t love cheesy bread, especially with chili? The presentation is a real crowd pleaser. This recipe is a keeper!
This special thing about this type of “hedgehog bread” is that it not only can be used for a wide variety of group gatherings (holiday gatherings, potlucks, brunches, etc.) AND can be filled with a huge range of savory ingredients (think savory fresh herbs, mushrooms, sausage, artichokes, bits of cooked cauliflower/broccoli, capers, olives, garlic, peas, etc. – BUT most importantly, it can be turned into a sweet treat, as well!
Pick your favorite sweet treats, like berries, coconut flakes, puddings, icings, sweet spices (cinnamon, nutmeg, etc.), chocolate/butterscotch chips, nut butters, raisins and other dried fruits, pineapple bits, nuts, different types of sugars, sweetened condensed milk, caramel. etc. and you can satisfy anyone’s sweet tooth using this same “hedgehog bread” strategy. Enjoy!
I have made this recipe before and I think a better way to spread the butter out perfectly is to freeze it, then grate it with the cheese. I am making it again on Thanksgiving in a few days. Thanks for the yummy recipe. :)
My wife and I made this today and it is absolutely fantastic. We have so many jalapeños from our garden, and this is a great way to enjoy them. I am going to make this for our next party!
I am thinking of trying cream cheese and hot pepper jelly….I will let you know how it turns out. If all else fails I think I will try it with cinnamon sugar! Thanks for the ideas.
This looks SO good! I’m not a huge fan of jalapenos… I’m going to substitute banana peppers instead. What do you think?

Just to let you know – this was a big hit on Superbowl Sunday!!
The bottom of the loaf was left and I made bread crumbs with it which I used on top of my oven baken mac & cheese.

i made this with provolone, green chiles and garlic for the super bowl – it disappeared very quickly. Make two! It’s nearly foolproof and you can make it with anything you want. Adding a fresh salsa and marinara sauce for dipping made it even more delicious
I made this for Superbowl. There are only two of us, so, I used a mini round sourdough and halved the recipe. It is to simply die for!!

For an equally tasty alternative stuff crumbled sausage, olives and mozzarella. Dip in marinara sauce, for a “pizza” bread.
WOW, I am going to try this, but I’m going to use turkey peperoni cut into strips, green onions, and sun dried tomatoes with mozzarella cheese. It’s going to be pulled pizza bread for the Superbowl!
I’m making a stew and I think this will be just the thing to dip into all that delish stew broth! Yummmmm!
I have seen this bread with the MJ Cheese and Onions, but the jalapenos are the perfect addition – love it!

Oh, that’s just wonderful! I have a party to host next weekend and I’ll have to put this on the table as an appetizers. However, I’m in Barcelona and jalapeños unfortunately are unappreciated. I’m thinking jazzing it up Mediterranean style with shredded mozzarella, jamon serrano and herbs! Thanks for the great idea!
MMMMMMM…….. There are so many different ideas coming to mind. This would be delicious with garlic butter, pepperonies, and mozzarella!
This sounds good. A bakery by my home makes one like this with spinach, artichoke and cheese. I bet you could do a cheddar, bacon with green onion. Or one like a French onion soup with caramelized onions, shredded beef and swiss. OH MY!
Go Niners!!! I am a Richmond (CA) native and lifelong Niners fan. My dad wouldn’t have it any other way. :) This looks delicious and really fun. It would be great with a bowl of chili beans and rice.
