Citrusy Cabbage Salad with Cumin and Coriander

Colorful shredded cabbage salad with oranges and radishes and a zesty lime cumin coriander dressing!

  • Prep time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: Serves 3 to 4


  • 6 cups thinly sliced cabbage, red or green or both
  • 3 green onions, thinly sliced
  • 5 radishes, sliced
  • 2 large oranges, supremed (sectioned and membranes removed)
  • 1/4 cup chopped fresh cilantro
  • 3 tablespoons lime juice
  • 1 tablespoon extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon crushed whole cumin seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt


Place all ingredients in a large bowl and toss to combine.

Serve alone or as a side to chicken, fish, seafood, or pork. Great served in fish tacos or with pulled pork.

    I’ve made something similar to this but i love a little heat with mine, so I added a pinch or more of cayenne pepper and carrots but this dound delicious too.

      Mine did — I made a batch (minus radishes since I had all other ingredients) for dinner and had left overs the next day for lunch. It held up pretty well.

    For the readers who are stressing over slicing the radishes, mandolines are an inexpensive investment for all cooks.

      Hi Rey, I agree, a mandoline is a very useful kitchen tool! I wouldn’t used it for radishes though, too small. The easiest way to cut a radish truly is to cut it first in half, then stabilize the radish with the cut side down on the cutting board.

    This looks great, a little bit of sunshine for a frigid day. I always warm the cumin and coriander before grinding them with a mortar and pestle. It really brings more depth to the flavors. And makes your house smell great!

    This salad sounds so bright and fresh! Just what we need in January. The whole cumin seeds and red cabbage are on my shopping list. Any trick to those beautiful finely cut radishes? Or, is it just practice and a good sharp knife?

      Hi Sandy, I think we cut the radishes that you see in the photo a little too thin, frankly. And it’s probably easier to cut the radishes in half, set them cut side down, and then slice them. That way the radish is stabilized while you make the cuts.

        Hi Elise, All thumbs up on this salad! We love it! I served it with cornbread and seasoned black beans. Slowing down to thinly slice the radishes was not a bad thing. It was a little Zenish to stay focused on each slice and I got pretty good at it. That was before I read your suggestion, which makes perfect sense and will do next time. Will certainly be having this salad again, and soon! Great dish to make with the family and for company.

    wondering about substituting basil for the cilantro (allergy) and lemon for the lime? will have to try it with these differences, looks too good to pass up!

      Hi Hockeymum, I think Thai basil might be a good substitute for the cilantro. As for the lime substitute, do you have access to sour Seville oranges? Those would be perfect.
