This is a legit sloppy joe recipe. Don’t got overboard on the brown sugar. The flavors linger after the fact. Easy directions and fun to follow.
Sounds great.. I like ground turkey would try it with that
Just made it! Did a few things to make it my own (no celery) and used allspice because I couldn’t find my cloves. Used an 8oz can of Goya spanish style tomato sauce. Really yummy
This is one of the best blogs I have read on this topic.
I’ve been making this for years and it’s incredible! My kids’ favorite dinner by far. I always double it and freeze the rest. Freezes beautifully!
These really are the best Sloppy Joes I’ve ever had. Took a minute to chop up some ingredients, but in the end it was well worth it. Give it a try, you won’t be sorry
I’m so glad you liked the sloppy joes Joe!
Excellent, Elise. Thank you for sharing this gem of a recipe.
Have made this for many years now, too many times to count, and it remains a family favorite. I have always used ground turkey in place of beef, and sometimes crushed tomatoes if I do not have tomato sauce on hand. We love it!
Amazing, new family favorite.
Brian Whitehead I used this one as a base with a few adjustments.
1 can tomato paste in place of ketchup (add about 1/2 cup water)
Added about 1/2 cup mustard bbq sauce
This is soo good! I did make a couple tiny changes though – I don’t normally have red wine vinegar on hand so I used some rice wine vinegar instead. Also, I left out the cloves because, well, personally I despise the taste of it lol. I hate to admit it but this is even better than the recipe my mother used – and I used for years. I somehow lost that recipe so I was so glad I found this one!
Tastes delicious, great texture, somewhat healthier than other recipes!!
I’ve made this recipe for several get togethers and I always get complimented and asked for the recipe. It’s my forever recipe now.
I’m so glad you like it Lorie!
Yummo. So easy and delicious. Have had savoury mince many times but never a sloppy joe, there will be no going back. My daughter also loved it.I actually had the sauce cooking while browning the vegetables and mince as i used tinned tomato – which i pureed before cooking. So good
This is truly the best recipe! Can’t be beat! I’ll be cooking this one for my family and friends forever. The flavor of this recipe is a perfect amount of zing and flavor, absolutely delicious. I love the vegetable combination, it gives this recipe a healthy kick. I did omit the cloves however because none was on hand and used half of tomatoe paste, ketchup and sugar. Turned out amazing!
When I first started dating my husband, I made this for him. His eyes went wide with the glorious flavors in his mouth. We’ve used this recipe a 100x ever since. I even have it printed off because I’m afraid it’s not always going to be available online. I never change a thing. <3 <3
Great sloppy joes! Would have rated 5 stars but I changed a couple of things. Because I am not a fan of it, I left out the dried thyme. Also subbed green peppers for the carrots and added about 2 teaspoons of yellow mustard. I was skeptical about the cloves, but I really think it gives great depth of flavor. So good!
Hi Elise! Can I make it ahead and warm it up to serve the next day?
Hi Jess, yes! You an easily make the sloppy joe mix ahead and just reheat it to serve over buns.
Love this, definite keeper. I switch out the ground beef for ground turkey. Made the mistake of not sautéing my veggies long enough.
