There’s nothing surprising about enjoying coffee and orange juice with your breakfast. But when you start talking about mixing the two, that’s when people start to raise their eyebrows. After all, it’s easy to assume that the strong flavor of these two breakfast staples would clash in the same drink. At least that’s what we thought before trying the Spring Refresher.
It turns out that the bright acidity of orange juice plays off coffee’s rich flavor quite nicely. Round it out with a little sugar and splash of Perrier® sparkling water and you have a cool drink that’s perfect for spring mornings, whether you’re enjoying brunch outside or getting ready to start your workday.
That’s not to say it’s as simple as dumping some orange juice into your morning coffee. The Spring Refresher only works so well when you maintain a delicate balance of coffee and orange juice, brew the coffee a specific way and—perhaps most importantly—choose the right blend of coffee. The good news is that the best blend shouldn’t be too hard to find. Our preferred coffee for the Spring Refresher is, appropriately, the Starbucks® Spring Day Blend.
An Italian Tradition
The fusion of orange juice and coffee might seem unconventional, but it’s not without precedent. In Italy, it’s not unusual to squeeze a wedge of orange into your espresso. The citrus brightens up the drink and adds some natural sweetness.
The Spring Refresher operates under the same principal, but at a larger scale. It’s also served cold, which is why it’s especially satisfying to sip during the spring. So if anyone is skeptical about this recipe, just tell them it’s Italian. No one doubts Italy knows what it’s doing when it comes to coffee.
The Right Coffee for Spring
The Starbucks® Spring Day Blend is the perfect base for the Spring Refresher, and not just because they both have ‘Spring’ in their name. The wonderfully balanced and smooth medium-roast has flavor notes that perfectly complement orange juice, like hints of cocoa and dried fruit. It’s subtly sweet without losing the richness the recipe requires.
The only downside is that this spring blend is only available for the season, so anyone who really enjoys the drink should stock up the Spring Day Blend. That way you’ll be able to keep cooling down with the Spring Refresher during the dog days of summer.
The Best Way to Brew
In order to keep the orange juice from dominating the drink, it’s important to make the coffee extra-strong, and the best way to do so is by double-brewing it. Some will argue you should do this by brewing your coffee with your normal ratio of grounds to water, then using that coffee instead of water to make a fresh pot.
However, a quicker and more precise method is simply doubling the amount of grounds you typically use when brewing coffee. Don’t be deterred if you don’t typically like your coffee strong. Topping the drink with an ounce of Perrier® Original Carbonated Mineral Water will dilute the coffee just enough, and also give the drink the fizzy and effervescent quality that makes it even more irresistible. Just be sure to use Perrier® Original, because a flavored seltzer or club soda will risk making the drink overly sweet.
Remember to Cool Down
The Spring Refresher is served cold, so you need to cool down the coffee before adding it to the drink. If you pour it directly from the pot into the glass, it’s going to melt the ice and dilute the coffee, throwing off the balance. The solution? Place the coffee into a pitcher and leave it in your refrigerator for an hour to cool before you prepare the Spring Refresher. Better yet, make the coffee and chill it the night before so you can enjoy a Spring Refresher first thing in the morning.
